While living in New Zealand, John and I got pretty into foraging mushrooms. We'd go out on foraging walks looking deep into the moss, trees and dirt to see what treasures we could find. Aside from eating the few edible ones we found like Woodear mushrooms, my favourite part was taking pictures of them and then coming home and adding it to the painting. It was fun not having a plan for this painting as I never knew what cool mushroom would catch our eye next! This painting took about 8 months of foraging, photographing and then painting to finish it. It was completed right before leaving New Zealand to come back to Canada.
